Carbon Emissions metrics
The IMO (International Maritime Organisation) has set a target for reducing annual GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions in shipping by at least 40% by 2030 and targeting a 70% reduction by 2050.
The IMO, via its MEPC (Marine Environment Protection Committee) is adopting amendments to MARPOL (the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships).
These changes will implement major new technical rules that particularly encompass two measurements:
1.) The first is the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) which is a framework for determining the efficiency of the design of a vessel;
2.) The second is the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) which is an operational measure of how efficiently a vessel transports its cargo, essentially in grams of Co2 emitted by (i) cargo-carrying capacity and (ii) nautical mile.
